Podcast Headphones on a Budget

By Mike Mahony

Podcast headphones are an essential piece of equipment for anyone editing a podcast, but they can be quite expensive. Today I want to show you the headphones I use and explain why I love them.

Headphones are a very important accessory when podcasting. Both during recording and while editing, podcast headphones make a huge difference in the quality of the show. There are several things that are important when buying podcast headphones.

Accuracy

You want headphones that sound true to the audio.

Most consumer headphones are designed with music- and other entertainment-listening in mind. These podcast headphones will enhance certain frequencies. While this will sound great for entertainment, you need a more accurate reproduction of your audio.

This is called flat frequency response. Professional headphones labeled as “studio” or “monitor” headphones will try to maintain this flat frequency response, but some will still “color” your sound a little.

Comfort

You spend a lot of time wearing podcast headphones so you want them to be comfortable. This is a key consideration when buying podcast headphones.

Price

You can get obscenely priced headphones. This is why I recommend a budget of between $70 and $100 for your podcast headphones. This will get you a decent pair like the pair I use (see later in this article).

Portability

Being able to carry your headphones with you is going to be very important. Podcast headphones will be used in many different places so they must be portable.

Sony MDR 7506 Headphones

I recommend the Sony MDR 7506 headphones. I purchased mine on Amazon several years ago. I’ve had to replace the ear cups once in 5 years. They are very durable, give great sound quality and are very comfortable for podcast headphones. I have found that they can be worn for hours on end with little to no issues at all. I purchased a hard …read more

Hire a Professional and Save Money

By Mike Mahony

Many people outsource their technology needs to other countries. They do so because they think hiring a professional is too expensive. I want to explain to you in this article how you save money by hiring a professional. You will get to see how a real-life example would have resulted in the ability to save money had the client taken the right approach.

The Situation

The client needed to migrate an existing WordPress installation from a development environment to a production environment. They hired an offshore systems administrator to handle this thinking they would save money. The concept here is truly simple. The client’s team had built a WordPress site on their development domain. Thus, the site was listed as “sitename.developmentserverdomain.com” and needed to move to “reallifedomain.com” (obviously these domains are fictitious).

The Offshore Resource

What happened next is very typical of offshore resources. The guy charged for everything he did, including the time he spent waiting for files to upload. He also charged a large block of time for “changing the base URL of all links in all pages and posts.” That sounds like a huge undertaking, right? Well, in reality, all the offshore guy did was open the database in a text file, search for the development URL and replace it with the live URL. It probably took 20 seconds at most. This continued for many aspects of moving the site. For instance, he charged more than an hour to use FTP to copy some files. That’s right! This guy opened up FileZilla and began a transfer of all files to the live domain and charged for every minute it took for those files to upload. Why?

In the end, the offshore resource charged 16.5 hours and a total of $257 to complete this task. That probably doesn’t seem bad to you, but …read more
