Hire a Professional and Save Money

By Mike Mahony

Many people outsource their technology needs to other countries. They do so because they think hiring a professional is too expensive. I want to explain to you in this article how you save money by hiring a professional. You will get to see how a real-life example would have resulted in the ability to save money had the client taken the right approach.

The Situation

The client needed to migrate an existing WordPress installation from a development environment to a production environment. They hired an offshore systems administrator to handle this thinking they would save money. The concept here is truly simple. The client’s team had built a WordPress site on their development domain. Thus, the site was listed as “sitename.developmentserverdomain.com” and needed to move to “reallifedomain.com” (obviously these domains are fictitious).

The Offshore Resource

What happened next is very typical of offshore resources. The guy charged for everything he did, including the time he spent waiting for files to upload. He also charged a large block of time for “changing the base URL of all links in all pages and posts.” That sounds like a huge undertaking, right? Well, in reality, all the offshore guy did was open the database in a text file, search for the development URL and replace it with the live URL. It probably took 20 seconds at most. This continued for many aspects of moving the site. For instance, he charged more than an hour to use FTP to copy some files. That’s right! This guy opened up FileZilla and began a transfer of all files to the live domain and charged for every minute it took for those files to upload. Why?

In the end, the offshore resource charged 16.5 hours and a total of $257 to complete this task. That probably doesn’t seem bad to you, but …read more

Let’s Explore Cloud Computing

By Mike Mahony

Cloud computing is something everyone has heard about. The problem is that most people have no idea what it is all about. Let’s have a look at that in this article.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of computing power, database storage, applications, and other IT resources through a cloud services platform via the internet with pay-as-you-go pricing.

The Basics of Cloud Computing

Regardless of your needs, a cloud computing platform will give you rapid access to a flexible and low-cost set of IT resources. There is no large up-front investment when you utilize cloud computing. You are able to access whatever resources you need almost instantly and only pay for what you actually use.

How Cloud Computing Works

Cloud computing provides a simple way to access servers, storage, databases and a broad set of application services via the Internet. A Cloud services platform such as Amazon Web Services, Azure of others owns and maintains the network-connected hardware required for these application services, while you provision and use what you need via a web application.

Six Advantages to Cloud Computing

  1. Trade capital expense for variable expense
Instead of having to invest a large sum of money in data centers and servers before you know exactly how you’re going to use them, you can only pay when you consume computing resources, and only pay for how much you consume. This not only saves time but a great deal of money as well. This can be the difference between testing a project’s viability or passing on it completely.
  2. Benefit from massive economies of scale
By using cloud computing, you can achieve a lower variable cost than you can get on your own. Because usage from hundreds of thousands of customers is aggregated in the cloud, providers can achieve higher economies of scale which translates into lower pay …read more
