Why We Don’t Do Joomla

By Mike Mahony

Content management systems are very popular because they make it easy to develop a nice website and keep it maintained. Joomla is not a content management system we recommend here at The Web Scientists. We have 5 reasons why we feel Joomla should be avoided.

Joomla Is Not Beginner Friendly

The first thing any experienced technologist will notice is that Joomla is far too complicated for the beginner. With the multitude of settings and other features, Joomla attempts to be way more than it should. This complicates matters for the beginner. It makes Joomla daunting to anyone who doesn’t understand web development completely. This is one of the reasons we won’t recommend this content management system to our clients. We prefer WordPress for simple sites and Drupal for sites that might need more customizable features.

Joomla Doesn’t Have A Lot of Available Plugins

WordPress and Drupal have a plethora of plugins that can extend their functionality. Joomla does not. This is another big reason we don’t recommend Joomla to beginners. They will require a programmer to make customizations for almost every idea they come up with.

Joomla Has Convoluted Approaches

While WordPress and Drupal stick to a simple method for building a site, Joomla tried to get too fancy. This created a convoluted approach to building a website that does not lend itself to beginners. It appears that Joomla wants to be all things to all people and has failed at that miserably.

Everything Joomla Does, WordPress Does Better

After working with both Joomla and WordPress, we have decided that WordPress does everything better than Joomla. The set up is easier, the maintenance is easier and the front end design is easier. WordPress is just a better thought out platform.
